How Developed Is Your Ear For Music?

Written by Jeff

When musicians are asked what skills have helped them grow the most, the two that are repeated most often are music theory and ear training. Why are these two so important?

Music Theory

Music theory helps musicians because it gives novices and pros alike a framework for understanding how things work together in music. It’s a critical foundation for any serious musician and an absolute necessity for anybody interested in composing or scoring music for a large ensemble.

Ear Training

Ear training is a skill that helps pull a lot of elements of music theory together but is also important in its own right. Having the ability to either produce any given pitch at will or knowing how to harmonize are both heavily dependent on a strong ear training background. Just like music theory, ear training ability is not one you are either born with or not. It can be learned with applied study.

My Plans For You

Currently, I am evaluating music theory and ear training programs. I will be posting my reviews in January 2009 and hope that you will join me as I break down the pros and cons of these programs and give you my final recommendations.

Those who know me will tell you that I will not recommend anything that I have not used myself and liked. Your trust means more to me than a quick and dirty buck. My belief is that you come to this blog to get ideas for helping you musically and that’s what I intend to provide.

My Best To You

I’m not sure where I’ll be over the next two weeks so…

In case I don’t post again until the New Year, let me wish all a happy and safe holiday season and the best wishes for 2009!
