Can Music Connect Us?

Written by DrumSetDude

If you spend any time around musicians, especially those that play frequently together, you’ll hear them mention at least once how they got lost in the music. Time stood still and everything just seemed to click. Some even report a trance-like state where everything they did just came out right. Others talk about how the whole group was on the same wave length and could actually anticipate the musical thoughts of their fellow players.

Synching Up Of Musical Brains

It looks like there is some new research which is helping to explain this phenomenon. Coming out of the Max Planck Institute, the study has found that as musicians play together, they also think together.

The study was done by monitoring the brain wave patterns of eight pairs of guitarists while they played a short fusion jazz melody up to sixty times. The study found that more than half of the pairs showed significant synchronization in the areas of the brain associated with the enjoyment of music.

What Does This Mean?

Even though the research should be repeated on a wider scale, the results have far ranging implications even beyond music. While it does point to the magic generated musically when players are able to transcend themselves and create something better than any one of them could create alone there’s still more. It shows us that making beautiful music could actually be a side-effect of connecting deeply with other human beings.
